Well, a niche is a category in which online businesses build products for solving problems that arise in that particular category.

It can also be a hobby you know something that you do every day and you enjoy doing something you know a lot about something that inspires you and makes you happy.

Doing research will help you understand the number of potential customers meaning that you will be able to know how many people search for a solution to a particular problem in a month and where they come from.
Now from that data, you can decide which products to promote and which niche to focus on.

You can use the keyword planner on Google AdWords.com you just need to have an email address to start a Google AdWords account and it is free to use. but if you want to do a little bit of advanced research you can use keywordtool.com which costs around 5 to $10 in a month.
A keyword is a word that is searched for by people frequently on the internet it could be how to lose weight or how to make money online, how to create an online business etc.
The high number of people searching for a particular keyword means that there is a huge demand for solutions to that particular keyword or problem.
With respect to a keyword, you can choose a product to promote and a niche to focus on. for example, let's say maybe you want to start promoting products you go to keywordtool.com or Googleadwords.com keyword planner and you type in how to lose weight.
It will show you a number of people searching for that particular keyword. In one month it would be 100K people or 500K people or even 1 million people a month.
From these numbers or data you can determine the number of potential customers you will have when you promote products that relate to that particular keyword.
All you have to do is to search for a product with an affiliate program you can join and start promoting.
The product has to be effective and of good quality and it has to be a converting product. I mean it has to be currently selling so that you can get profits easily from promoting it.
